One of smartests ways to gain attention for your business is to write articles related to your product or service. You can upload these articles to a host of different article websites available (you're probably on one right now). These are time-tested attention getters to promote your website or other service.
One of the best topics to write about is to provide a critique of a product or service. This will enable your reader to cross reference the product or service in question and make an informed decision, provided you're furnishing useful information.
These reviews are most useful if you are knowledgeable about your competitions product. Do your homework and find out all you can, good and bad. Of course, it wouldn't be prudent to provide more good than bad information about a product with whom you are competing, but savvy writers will always tread smartly. Understand the pitfalls and shortcomings about your product. Too often, the purveyor is the most biased of all and can't see his product the way his market sees it. This will provide you an unbiased look at your marketing campaign thus enabling a 'cleaner' view.
Be a student of your niche. It is vitally important for you to know about not only your product or service, but the industry itself. Any lack of knowledge you carry into your campaign will be evident and can be exploited by your competition. Being ahead of that curve will surely put you at an advantage as the advertiser, because I can assure you that most or your competitors will not perform this task.
It helps if you've actually used your competitor's product itself. You may first start out by writing about something you've tried before. Because you are intimately familiar with this product or service, you can accurately portray yourself as a well informed customer. This familiarity will contribute to your credibility.
If you haven't used the product, consider actually seeking out someone who has. Access social networking websites and start asking questions. People are often quick to volunteer insightful information. Take advantage of this to inform yourself.
People love reading reviews. Websites like consumerreports.com and the like are flooded with inquiries about products and services for the informed buyer. You can be that information. With enough skill, you have the ability to influence smart buyers and earn their business.
Be ethical. The pool you're swimming in is filled with writers who release false and misleading information about other people's products, including their own. Practices such as this will always put you at an advantage because your readers will expect more. As a writer who is above the unscrupulous actions of a few, you can earn yourself the reputation as the seller of choice.
