Returning To The Writer Within

By Melvin Polatnick

There are millions of things to write about, picking one of them is easy. I like to write about what I find interesting and also has a chance of helping some reader get through an otherwise boring day. My favorite subject is about relationships, everybody is involved in one, so my audience is large. I could easily write about the technical and financial side of life, but that is being done by everybody else. So I chose to write about relationships that are unconventional. Now that I am retired and live alone I have plenty of time to remember the past and write about those people that not only were interesting, but also had a humorous side to them. I always was always an outsider, even while being married. After my night shift textile job I drove to Greenwich Village where I knew many "beatniks" Most were from faraway places. They traveled to the village to explore stories about free and wild sex. After a taste of the "good life" most returned to their jobs and families in their hometown. Platos Retreat opened in the early seventies and I became one of their steady customers. In the summer months I took long walks along the beach watching the waves break and spoke to many lovers of the seashore. Some of their stories are told in my articles. I also had the seagulls as company and they got to know me as a guy who fed them well. Often I sat on the jetty with my radio and plugged into the great music of that time. My wife was also an outsider, and a wonderful understanding person. Life can be beautiful and it was for me. Besides my wife and children I was not deeply involved with many people. I spent a lot of my spare time observing how people go about their lives and how they think. It shocked me to find that many of them were dishonest to themselves. What they all had in common was a core of fear that was very apparent. It was in them that I discovered humor, and it gave me the material to use in my present articles. There is never a shortage of memories or material to write about. People that are retired have all the time they need to catch up on the things they missed. With so few years left they should not waste a moment. It has become a time for self-discovery. They will find within themselves the child that they left behind, and feel it is a time for a reunion. Together life can become more beautiful than ever. I started writing articles when I was ten years old and was picked by my teacher to read them to my classmates. It made them laugh, and I was very proud of myself. But it wasn't easy growing up and I buried my writing talents in the deep recesses of my mind. It was only recently that I rediscovered them, and I am thankful that I did.
