Before you have children you really have no idea what the deal is with a diaper bag. I must confess, I didn't even know it was something that left the house. I just assumed it was just there to fill up with diapers and never considered the dozens of things that can go inside of it. With the explosion of babies in the news it seems there are dozens of new gifts that are out there and shown in magazines. The field of diaper bags has gone along for the ride and it seems are everywhere now. Different colors, styles, features are all the rage. New parents can not believe all the steps necessary to take baby out for the day. There are many things one takes to make it a positive outing and make the fun of taking baby out and about, well, fun. You can always get baby some clothing as a baby gift or a little toy, but to really help mom and dad out a nice, designer diaper bag like Petunia Pickle Bottom or Skip Hop do the trick. Below I will list some examples of what parents take to go out with just one child let alone more.
1. Multiple Diapers, baby needs to keep clean and they can certainly go through a diaper every couple of hours.
2. Some paste or cream to keep the toosh fresh. You don't want a rash.
3. Wipes to wipe up.
4. A changing pad to lay baby down to do the diaper change or change clothing.
5. A little toy to distract baby while the change is going on.
6. Some extra clothing for many reasons.
7. Food when baby gets hungry.
8. Water or formula for when baby needs a drink.
9. A cell phone and keys.
10. Burp Cloths to help with the feedings.
11. Sun lotion so baby doesn't get too much sun.
12. Blankets in case a chill comes on.
13. Benedryl in case of a reaction.
14. A journal for the numbers of the doctor etc.
These are just some small examples of all things it takes to leave the house and have a great day. Until you are a parent or a caretaker of kids I don't think it is apparent when you see people pushing strollers on the streets what exactly is in that bag than hangs on the handle bars or is thrown over mom or dad's shoulder.
As far as picking out a great baby gift there are so many choices. From personalized baby gifts like blankets and robes to more practical gifts like bottles and liners and mobiles there are many choices, but make sure if they don't already have a diaper bag that you consider that in your options. If you have the ability to get a classy designer bag that may even be more special because while baby may get a lot of gifts it's nice for the parents to feel they can still have a little style and not be people wit stained shirts and exhausted eyes.
