They say that women are the complicated ones but, actually, when it comes to gifts for him it can be so much more difficult to get it right. Men like to think they're straightforward, but actually they are a lot more complicated to buy for than most women. Maybe it's just because they're picky? Maybe they are actually a bit more "deep" than they'd like to let on? Perhaps this is just their revenge for all the difficult conversations they blame on women being hard to understand.
