Deciding what to wear at work could sometimes be very stressful. It is difficult to know what is acceptable and what could be considered inappropriate for work. Even though these days, men and women are encouraged to be free and individualistic, there are still certain limits in office fashion.
If you are working in a serious company, then it should basically follow that your clothing be appropriate and representative of the company that you work for. However, how do you express your femininity in the office and your individuality without crossing the border of appropriate office clothing?
Finding the Balance
It is important then to find a balance between the two – clothing that represent your individuality without being inappropriate. If you walk into the office wearing a miniskirt and a low décolletage, you will certainly attract a lot of attention. Some people might compliment you for this but you put yourself in a difficult position when you dress up in a provocative way. You might be subjected to unwanted attention and might not be taken seriously. It is important to take care of the way you look, particularly if you are dealing with customers. You want to represent and convey the ideals of your company, and not your own.
The problem with office clothing however, is that, it tends to rob you of your individual style; but it doesn't have to be so. You can express your femininity without wearing overly provocative clothes. Wearing accessories and outfits that highlights your best features could give you more attention than a short skirt or spiked heels. Adding a dash of color could bring life to your usual office outfit as well. As long as you keep your office style balanced between too much and too dull, then you are on the right way.
Ideally, you shouldn't be judged by the way you dress but it is not how the real world works. Many surveys reveal that if you don't dress appropriately for a job, then you don't take your responsibilities and your job seriously. Dressing provocatively might also be considered a sign that you are looking for a date and dating in the office is not something that most companies encouraged.
Most people might think that dressing sexy at work would help an employee to get promoted faster and easier. However, in real life, it is the opposite for people usually do not take you as a professional unless you dress professionally. You might be the most attractive person in the office, but that does not guarantee you the professional advancement that you want if you don't act and dress seriously.
In the end, it's all up to you. There are many ways to achieve individuality and femininity without looking sloppy and tacky. Also, too plain and boring office clothing might make you less and less inspired at work. Just always think of what you want to convey to others and if the way you are dressing somehow sends that same message. The business environment might be a little strict at times but there are always ways to dress up and stand out without being out of place.
