A Young Man's Heart Touched by Mom's Jewelry

I never taught of anything special about mom's jewelry. As a kid, I used to watch her get all fancied up, dressed and slowly open her jewelry box and start to tinker and mix and match her jewelry with the dress she was wearing. As a guy, I couldn't figure out how significant a piece was coming from mom's jewelry. An earring is an earring, a bracelet is a bracelet, a ring is a ring. It never made sense to me. Of course I was around 8 years old so I didn't care. All I wanted to do was to go out of the house and ride my bicycle with my friends. We would be out at 8 am on the weekends, taking the whole day biking and picking up friends along the way. We were into just cruising down our village and hanging out in the park. Life was good and simple then. Then I became attracted to the opposite sex. Man that hits you hard. Suddenly, riding a bike isn't as cool as it was before. Now, you don't want to sweat all day for fear that you smell bad when you see a girl. The girls you used to play kickball with at the village park now look a lot different to you. You notice their smiles more, and see how they have this sparkle in their eye and hope that they see you as well and that they blush, and you hope that you don't blush too much as well. I had this huge crush on Kit. She was around my age and the year before we used to hang out together. I was a skateboarder and she rode on skates, not the inline skates but the old school type of skates. Inline skating wasn't around when I was a teenager. We were also in tennis though I played at a different club where she did. Anyway, I tried not to show that I did like her, but as an incoming teenager I was lousy at hiding that. She still was very friendly to me but she had other things to do and often times, she could not come out to play with us in the afternoon. I thought that she was avoiding me but I learned later on that she was actively training for tennis matches as she wanted to play in national tournaments. As her birthday approached, I resolved to get her a tennis bracelet as a gift. Consulting my mom's jewelry as a reference point, I was surprised to find a tennis bracelet in my mom's jewelry box. At that point, I see my mom looking at me with some interest and concern. Looking and feeling guilty, I spilled my guts and told her that I wanted to get something like what was in my hand for a friend. My mom stopped, turn to her closet and open a drawer. She took her time in looking at the contents of the drawer, intent on seeing something that I think would fit the occasion. She asked me to open up my hand, which I did and she gently placed a simple gold bracelet on it. Without asking for whom it was for, she reminded me to get a nice box, and good gift wrapping materials for it. She also handed me a nice long strip of blue silk ribbon which I could use as a bow. From then I realized how important mom's jewelry really is in life.
