By John Harricharan

"Just a little of this and some of that," he replied with a teasing smile. "And how do you two know each other, Matthias? I thought Gideon had very few friends," I kidded. "He has friends all over the cosmos," Matthias replied. "He and I have had quite some adventures together. We go way back. It's a long story." Gideon laughed and announced in a matter-of-fact manner, as if he were telling me about the weather, "Matthias is what you'd call an angel, John. He's on a short visit here . . . ." "An angel? You're an angel, Matthias?" I asked in disbelief. "Oh yes," he said, "I've always been an angel. I'm sure you've met others like us. It's great when assignments bring me this way. I don't get to see Gideon and Marla too often." "You know Marla, too?" "Who doesn't?" he replied. "But you aren't dressed like an angel," I said. "They call him," said Gideon, "the Angel with the Golden Wings. Show him your golden wings, Matthias." I knew they were enjoying seeing me so confused. As I watched, Matthias pulled up his left sleeve to reveal a bracelet. On the bracelet was a charm — a pair of little gold wings, the kind you might find at any good jewelry store. "These are my golden wings, John, a left-over from the old days when everyone expected us to have large feathery wings that flapped as we flew. It was quite a dumb idea because the stupid things would go unstable at high speed and,had it not been for our celestial flight mechanisms, you'd literally have seen many falling angels. But what can I say? The people expected us to have wings, so wings we had. Now I carry my wings on this bracelet as a reminder that if the Chief wanted me to have birds' wings, He would have made me a bird." "He means every word of it John," said Gideon.
