I started out playing free online poker. I played for PLAY money chips to gain experience. Honestly, I really wasn't gaining experience as many players playing for play money DO NOT TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. I have honestly seen it all and here are some examples. They will go all in with middle pair, bottom pair, 2 6 off suit, 3 7 off suit, etc… I have seen it all. If you play at the play money table and start winning, please do not get over confident. I finally started gaining a bunch of experience the second I deposited real money. I didn't make the mistake many poker players make by jumping right into a cash game to high for their bankroll. If you deposit 50 dollars, you need to stick to .10/.25 cent blinds, not depositing 50 dollars and playing 1 / 2 dollar no limit. It happens all the time and I see it every single day! Do not fall victim to this! Most people think they can jump right into a poker game to high for their bankroll in hopes of doubling up. The only thing you will double up is your deposit charge. It is a BIG mistake to have a mindset of thinking you must double up so quickly. .10/.25 is a reasonable level for 50 dollars and you should stick to that level until you at least have $100.00 in your bankroll. Bankroll management is one of the most important factors to your success. It is often overlooked and when it is indeed overlooked, you fail.
I started playing poker for cash 20 years ago. It has been a fun ride which turned me into a millionaire. It definitely didn't turn me into a millionaire overnight. It took hard work, years of practice, and hours and hours of dedication. In those 20 years I never played stakes too high for my bankroll. This really was the single most important step that turned me into a profitable cash game player. The 2nd most important factor to your success will no doubt be practice. The famous saying "practice makes perfect" is definitely true when it comes to playing poker to earn a stable income.
