About a year ago, I had two big problems. I was renovating my home and had lots of junk piling up with nowhere to go. I also had this piece of property in the middle of nowhere that the agent promised me was going to be hot but thanks to the recession I over paid for land that I don't use and can't sell.
Then came over this crazy idea from my 13 year old son, " Why don't we play paintball at the other land?" he asked so innocently. He had recently gotten into the idea that everything revolved around paintball and for a moment I thought it was a crazy idea until he hit me while I was carrying an old door. I used it to shield myself and from then on there's been no turning back.
We put all the junk we had from the renovation, old boards, doors, a garage door, a rafted closet door, and pieces of metal and even got some stuff from our neighbours. My son and I went out to the piece of land and planted everything there. Randomly of course because the more rugged the area is the more fun it is to hide and hit!
We then called over a couple of his friends and their parents and when they got there we surprised each with a blob of paint on their clothes: this meant war. We had hired many paintball guns so there was enough to go around and we had the most fun we have had in a long time. One of my friends later on brought his old barbecue pit and we had a roast going when the war was over. In the evening we made a bonfire and watched the sunset as we laughed over or victories and losses in the day.
The piece of land now makes me quite a bit of money as almost every weekend in the summer it is booked for a day of paintball and barbecue. I even got camping equipment so that people can stay overnight if need be (at an extra fee of course!). Best of all, I am the world's favourite dad (for now at least) and his friends and their dad's love to come out and bond in the wild. I'm also the go to guy in our street when any big junk comes up, as people do not want to pay for scrap yard to come pick them up, plus it gives those who are part of our patronage a chance to feel like they own the place.
I sometimes go out there with a cool box full of water and soda for the kids and Budlight for the grown ups. My best mate brings steak from his butchery and my wife brings the buns to make the most delicious burgers after the challenges of the day. We also carry a few packs of mash-mellows for the bonfire later.
I eventually bought a few paintball guns to provide a few to my new clients and I used my son's advice. We also made out a few t-shirts which we sell as their demand should be high if the patrons lost their campaign!
If you have the same kind of problem I had why not do this? The only real costs you will have to come by is the cost of your kids getting really good aim at paintball! You might also need a license if you are going to do it commercially and you need to see the zoning committee if need be. You will also eventually have to get a kind of a lock box to keep some stuff out there.
The best part is that if you set-up a paintball arena, you will have lots of fun and bonding time and when you need the land back, it'll take just one truck ride and your place is brand new!
