Caring For a Wheaten Terrier

There's a good reason why dogs are referred to as man's best friend, because the truth is, dogs are more likely to take care of us than we are of them. Think about it. They do their best to cheer us up when we are down, bring us our slippers in the morning (if they know how) they even help us get a little exercise when they take us out for walks. That is why most people think of dogs as easy-going animals that don't require much looking after, especially when they grow out of their newspaper phase. But not all dogs are the same. Fact is, some of them require quite a bit of looking after. These dogs might be called difficult or just high maintenance. The Wheaten Terrier falls into the second category. In this article, we will take a look at this interesting breed and discuss just what it takes to properly care for them. The Wheaton Terrier originated in Ireland in the 18th century and was breed as a sheep herding dog. But now days, the Wheaton is one of the most popular and sought-after show dogs in the world. Though the animal is said to have a winning personality and is far less aggressive than many other terriers, its claim to fame is its magnificent coat of hair. That's right-the soft-coated terrier has hair, not fur. That can make it particularly difficult to maintain, especially since the Wheaton is a fairly active dog who loves to run around outdoors. How do you care for the coat of a Wheaton Terrier? Like many popular show dogs, there are strict standards professionals have when evaluating the coat of a Wheaton Terrier. If you are interesting in learning more about competitive grooming techniques, you can always look online. But in this article, we are going to be paying more attention to techniques that will help maintain a healthy coat of hair for your dog. Whether or not your dog is an indoor or outdoor pet, the Wheaton Terrier will require frequent grooming to keep the coat soft and shiny and to prevent matting and tangling. If your dog is allowed outdoors, you may have to brush out any dirt or leaves several times a week, perhaps daily. You may also have to bathe him more frequently than ordinary dogs to remove dust and dirt that can easily attach to his coat. As with any dog, you must pay close attention to his nails and teeth. If you do not know how to properly clean or trim the nails, it is best to take him to a professional dog grooming service rather than risking injury to your animal. It is also important to train or to have your animal properly trained. The Wheaton Terrier is an intelligent, active dog that is known to respond well to training. The best thing to do is to start as early as possible and be firm with your dog when necessary. In conclusion, although the Wheaton Terrier is a breed of dog that requires a bit more attention than the average mutt, they also make ideal pets due to their great personalities and boundless energy.
