Many children do not do well in school because they are suffering from school stress. This situation leads to anxiety and depression in these children, so it is important to know what the symptoms are and what a parent can do to help eliminate this type of stress. Experts feel that school stress can be caused by a number of things. A child may become stressed if he doesn't know the answer to a question. He may also become upset over incomplete or late homework. He may have trouble understanding some of his subjects and he may just give up. As a child becomes stressed at school, he may exhibit some symptoms at home. If you notice that your child is becoming irritable and nervous, he may be having problems at school. As he becomes more worried, your child may begin to lose his appetite and his sleep may become disturbed. He may become depressed and begin to suffer from headaches. If you think that your child is suffering from school-related stress, there are several things that you can do to help him. You should talk to him to try to discover the cause of his stress. If he is having a hard time in one of his subjects, you can spend extra time helping him in that area. You can go over his studies step by step to make sure that he understands it and encourage him to ask questions. You can make up tests that cover the things that your child has been studying to help him feel comfortable taking tests at school. If you are not familiar with the subject, check into getting a tutor to help him. If the child is turning incomplete homework, you can make sure that he takes the time he needs to complete his work. You need to remember to be calm and supportive. If you become impatient, this will add to your child's feelings of inadequacy and can accelerate his stress. Some children's stress is related to eating and sleeping habits. You should provide your child with nutritious meals and make sure that he is eating breakfast. You may want to make his bedtime earlier to make sure that your child is getting plenty of sleep. Your child may be trying to do too much, especially if he participates in extra curricular activities. If your child is involved in three different activities, you may want to cut him down to one. Ask him which activity is his favorite, and then give him your full support in that one area. Your child may also have a problem managing his time. This is usually a result of poor organizational skills. You can draw up a schedule for him that includes adequate study time as well as time for other activities. You may also encourage him to lay his clothes and books for school out the night before. This eliminates any stress in the morning because the child does not have to rush around to find something. Children can suffer from stress just as adults do. By organizing his time and supporting him in his school work, you can help your child to learn to relax and this can help him to become a better student
