Accutane, which is commonly referred to as Isotretinoin is a medication that is prescribed for severe acne sufferers. While Accutane is extremely effective at countering acne breakouts, as well as preventing recurring acne breakouts, there are many serious side effects that can be dangerous to those that use it.

It should be noted that receiving a prescription of Accutane requires the patient to consult with a dermatologist and sign a pledge with the FDA. Because there are many serious side effects that can occur when taking Accutane, most notably birth defects, you can not be currently pregnant or become pregnant while on Accutane. In order to receive a prescription if you are a female, you will be required to take two pregnancy tests, both showing negative results and then a pregnancy test each month while on Accutane. In addition, you will be asked to use two forms of birth control if you are sexually active, or if you have issues with birth control, pledge you will not engage in sexual intercourse.

Mild side effects of Accutane include mild irritation to the skin, dryness of the lips, dryness of the mucus membranes and eyes and thinning of the hair.

Moderate side effects of Accutane can cause moderate to serious irritation of the skin, extreme dryness of the eyes and mucous membranes, raised glucose level, tiredness and mood changes.

Severe side effects include the possibility of a pregnant woman having a child with a birth defect, loss of hair, hepatitis, pancreatitis, moderate to severe mood changes and menstrual disturbances.

Before asking to be prescribed Accutane, you should consult with your physician on the possible side effects that you can encounter when taking this medication. Make sure you educate yourself on the side effects and once on Accutane if you encounter any problems, contact your doctor immediately.
