It seems like every time you turn the television on you are overwhelmed by the sheer number of infomercial pushing some product called Hoodia Gordonii that is suppose to be the next miracle pill that will save the world from becoming one giant obese population. While that sounds great you can't help wondering. What is Hoodia Gordonii?
Hoodia is a botanical plant that grows in Southern Africa in the Namib Desert. Despite the similarity in appearance Hoodia is not a cactus, it simply looks like one. There are thirteen species of Hoodia plants in the region of central Namibia to southern Angolia. Long before it became popular for weight loss the members of the San tribe in Southern Africa used Hoodia Gordonii to help cure indigestion, to push hunger pains away when making long treks across the desert, and to cure minor infections. In its natural state the Hoodia Gordonii plant has a bitter taste.
