There are considerable factors pertaining to web hosting that are not possible to explain but in simple terms, cheaper does not necessarily mean its better.
If a web hosting company is offering to low a rate than either you are one very luck individual or there is something seriously wrong, there is no third option. There is a complete infrastructure in the background on which a web hosting service runs and it is something easier said than made. Very low rates should turn on the caution lights for you, as there will most probably be something wrong or will go wrong eventually. What few companies have done is that they have leased the services rather than create their own infrastructure which does not work out so well, make sure that the company you will host your website with will have their own proper infrastructure with experience in the relevant field. Starts up companies do offer good value for money, rates and there is no harm with going with them but make certain they are a properly planned out company.
Another thing you should be beware about are very tall claims, there is always sometime (even if you do not get to know about it) that the server is down for one reason or another and there can be no 100 percent guarantee on uptime. You should also try checking out the companies customer service because usually, some companies have a very strong sales force which will talk about wonders but if you were to confront their customer service, you will have a much better picture of how good the company really is and another side of them altogether.
The web hosting company should have a very informative and descriptive website as it is their business, if they have a small website which does not answer many questions, most probably their technical expertise would also match that of their website. Always be careful to look at the fine print, never go for web hosting company which have terms and conditions in fine print as there will generally be a catch in there somewhere and the fine print is there for you to not notice but complete the legal formalities.
A good web hosting company will already have a steady clientage and ask them for their client referrals, if they are hesitant than there is probably something, which you would not want to know about. The web hosting companies who focus more on selling their product rather than retaining their clients should not be chosen under any circumstance as this will create a problem for you once you are their client.
You should always take a professionals opinion because their knowledge will be deep and they will know the latest things going on in the market and might even know about the particular web hosting company you are interested in.
