Many think that orchids are tropical flowers, which only thrive in warm climate. Contrary to popular belief, orchids actually flourish in most climate types, depending on its variety and class.

There are actually almost 20,000 types of orchids, some of which grow in the artic. However, I am sure many will agree that the most colorful, exotic looking varieties of orchids are those that can be found in tropical countries.

There is no one guaranteed way to grow an orchid. Thus, if you want to try your hand in taking care of orchids, you first need to know what type of orchid is ideal to your environment. Such flowers are actually categorized based on its water and temperature needs.

For beginners, it is ideal to get orchid varieties that need moderate temperature and adequate water requirement. However, once you have decide to take on the duty of taking care of an orchid, you must be prepared to repot, prune, and provide all the conditions necessary to make this flower thrive and bloom.

Here are the things that you need to know in growing an orchid like a pro:

Light

Most orchid varieties need light, so be sure to place the plant where it can get indirect sunlight, particularly in mid afternoon and in the morning. Since it is going to be quite gloomy in winter, you need to expose your plant in fluorescent light, to compensate for lack of sunlight.

If the leaves or foliage of your plant turn deep green, it needs more sunlight. If the leaves turn yellow green, however, it is overexposed to light. You will know when your plant is ready to bloom when its foliage has a faint tint of yellow.

Soil

Organic material, such as osmunda fiber and fir bark combined with peat, is the most ideal soil composition for tropical orchids. You must also ensure that the soil you will use will be able to hold moisture. However, too much water can kill your plant or stunt its growth, so be sure to mix in some pebbles to your soil for proper drainage.

Temperature

To ensure that your orchid will bloom, the plant should be exposed to warm temperature during the day and a cooler temperature in the night. However, if there is an extended warm climate, do not worry because your plant will not die, it would just not bloom.
