Knowing how to prepare for a professional school interview is important, and learning how to prepare for a health studies school interview is certainly no exception to the rule. The ideal candidates for professional schools are individuals that are mature, and that exhibit ethical behavior, integrity, sound judgment, skills in problem solving, leadership qualities, the ability to deal with stress and the ability to work well in teams and with others. Interviews can range in length, and also the material that they cover, and being prepared is important. You may be dealing with a panel that may include members of faculty, members of the community, residents and students, and the purpose of the panel is to reduce the amount of individual bias in selecting a candidate. You may also go through a sequential interview, which is multiple miniature interviews in a timed setting, where candidates are charged with going from room to room and receiving questions in each room. Group interviews allow for your problem solving skills to be assessed, and they provide a better sense of your leadership potential for the interviewers. They usually involve several different candidates being interviewed at the same time. There are also closed file interviews and open file interviews. In the closed file versions, no information about you has been made available, but in the open file version of the interview, your grades from the MCAT tests are made available. Having an interview strategy is going to be important no matter what program you are trying to apply for, so make sure that you put ample time and effort into the preparation for this purpose. Research the program as well as the school that you are applying for before the interview. Choose an outfit that is appropriate. Review your profile and your application to make sure that you are ready to go. You should also make sure that you arrive between 5 and 10 minutes early to show that you are serious. It is also important that you know why you are entering into the profession, as well as what the profession is really all about. During your interview, you should be paying attention to your own non-verbal communication as well as your body language. Always make sure that you are maintaining eye contact with the person that is interviewing you. Also, avoid saying things like "um", "like" and "you know" when you respond to the questions that are being asked of you. There is no way for you to predict what will be asked of you, but you can still take many steps to prepare yourself for your interview. The more that you know, and the more confident that you are, the better you will do as long as you can remain calm and answer the questions that are asked of you in a proper manner. Make sure that you are respectful, and show interest in what is going on as often as you can for the best results.
