Life can come at us hard sometimes, but when those difficult times arrive it is wonderful to know that caring friends and loved ones surround you. If someone you know has recently suffered a loss one of the best expressions of your sympathy could be to send him or her an elegant and tasteful gift basket. Gift baskets are the perfect gift because of their versatility. Because you can fill a basket with virtually anything, it only stands to reason that a gift basket could be a welcome added touch. It is an old, traditional custom to bring food to the home of someone who has experienced a loss. The last thing a person who is mourning will think about is making and eating food. It is a wonderful custom to help ease a tiny bit of their burden by showering them with love, caring, and food. Some of the most appreciated sympathy gift baskets will include a large variety of food items both fresh and packaged that allows someone to have a small snack anytime the feeling comes upon them. Sympathy baskets like this will have small packages of cookies or shortbread, an assortment of muffins or even a selection of meats and cheeses. Along with these types of items, it could have a selection of fresh fruit such as apples, pears, oranges and plums. Yet another sympathy gift basket based on food items could be a selection of different jams, jellies, and marmalades along with a selection of biscuits, bagels, and English muffins. Still another gift basket includes different types of coffees, teas, and a small pound cake. These are all very thoughtful gifts and ones that are greatly appreciated. All of the selections mentioned are beautifully arranged in a large sturdy wicker basket or a tastefully decorated box or tray. Many of the baskets are adorned with a black ribbon or bow. In addition to this, many of the food items will have the words "in sympathy" written on the individual packages and also on the ribbon. Sympathy gift baskets don't always have to contain food however. There are sympathy gift baskets that are made up of uplifting and consoling literature, videos and books. If the person were spiritual or religious, then filling the basket with appropriate items of comfort that reflects their spirituality would be most suitable. Along this line, other baskets that could be given are filled with soothing candles and all arranged on a beautiful silver tray. You can even order sympathy gift baskets filled with relaxing and aromatherapy-based products. Other ideas of what items to include in a sympathy gift basket could be a gift basket based on gardening. You could include a variety of seeds, some garden implements or even a kit that would allow them to grow herbs indoors. Being able to tend to something that is growing reaffirms the beauty of life and gives them a daily reminder of how precious life is. You can also find many gift baskets that will offer sympathy in different types of situations. For instance, the terrible loss of a child either through miscarriage or in infancy can be so difficult. There are companies that can offer comfort through their gift baskets that would be hard to express in any other way. These types of gift baskets can include figurines of little angels, small candles that include sayings expressing their loss and popular books of comfort on how to grieve and heal after experiencing such a loss. There are also gift baskets that specialize in items geared toward a young child who has just experienced the loss of a parent or grandparent. These items are age appropriate for a young child and the books, magazines and trinkets are there to help adults explain such a hard concept to the child. Some of the other items that may be included in this type of sympathy gift basket include a huggable teddy bear or therapeutic journals and workbooks for the child to color and express their feelings. Sometimes, a person may wish to put together his or her own type of gift basket. This is especially appropriate if you are a close family member or a long time dear friend. You would be in a better position to know exactly what types of items would be appreciated the most. You could include things that have special meanings and memories attached to them. One such item that could be included would be a locket with their picture on one side and a picture of their lost loved one on the other. Another idea would be to include a small music box that plays a piece of music that brings with it happy memories. In creating your own gift you could make something called a memory box and fill it with pictures, mementos, and items that the two of you could go through together and remember old times. Other great items to include in any sympathy gift basket are CDs of their favorite music or DVDs of their favorite movies. There are many good books and workbooks that help a person deal with their grief. In addition, adding a beautiful journal and pen could be a wonderful gift to help the grieving person express their feelings and help them to work through the stages of grief. More practical ideas to include in any sympathy gift basket are gift certificates to local grocery stores, restaurants and department stores. Many times a person suffering a loss is not only experiencing the loss of a loved one but may also suffer from financial difficulties due to the death. Helping out in this way will be very appreciated and may help reduce some of their anxiety. Sometimes, the person suffering the loss isn't suffering from the loss of a person, but the loss of a beloved family pet and companion. There are even companies that specialize in items to express your sympathy in these types of cases. For this type of sympathy gift basket it is best to include picture frames, appropriate literature and items that bring up happy memories. When someone experiences a loss it doesn't matter what type it is. A loss is a loss and being able to comfort someone during this difficult time is a blessing. Gift baskets are so versatile that expressing your sympathy through one is a very simple but very effective offering.
