Flirting is a way of expressing your interest in a woman in a playful way to see whether or not you are attracted to each other and for a lot of men learning how do this skill can be very difficult and frustrating. That's ok. You are in a good place to learn what you did wrong, and more importantly how to become successful doing so.
The first thing you need to have is confidence in yourself. You can do this by being comfortable with who you are, what you are wearing, where you are in life, etc. That is just the first step though. Next you have to be able to make an approach in which she doesn't laugh you off the planet. That is what you are most afraid of right? Alright, first of all that isn't even possible, and secondly, even if she does laugh that isn't necessarily the worst thing, you can turn that around into something to break the ice.
Alright, but the problem is you don't know how to flirt right? Or you are too afraid to try it. What you need to do is try to be funny, and confident, even if you don't really feel that way. Women are attracted to confidence, that is why one of the most successful forms of flirting is when you are both a little cocky and a little funny. You would act a little presumptuous but make it sound funny as well. A good example of this might be approaching a girl at the book store. She might be holding a cooking book.
You say: "You know if you are looking for something to cook me for dinner in there, I am really just a Mac and Cheese kind of guy, I can give you the recipe with my phone number."
Most likely she is going to laugh, and respond by saying something that could lead you to believe she is either interested or taken. If she is taken, you can laugh it off and continue with any kind of conversation you like, or move on if she is not taken you can get to know about her from there.
You don't necessarily have to come off looking like a jerk that presumes she is interested in you and wants you. That isn't the point at all. The point is to be confident and make her laugh, but in a good way of course. You want to break the ice, get to know a little bit about her, ask her questions and get her talking. Only once she tells you about herself will you be able to figure out if she is your type and if you should ask her on a date. .
Flirting you have to remember is an acquired attitude. You should practice, the more you do so the more successful you will be at it. Of course you are going to have situations where you are not successful, at least most men will at some point. This doesn't mean you should give up, it just means you have to keep trying, and most likely the person you approached wasn't interested, or didn't get your form of flirting.
