No matter who you are or what you do you more than likely have a computer at home, your office, or both with files on it that you want to safeguard. Documents, pictures, music files, and the like are all important to you and if you lost them you may be sunk. Fortunately there are a number of methods that can be employed to help protect your files from the unthinkable.
Perhaps you may be thinking that you simply won't lose any files. Well think again because every day there are thousands and thousands of files lost to such unforeseen events as hard drive crashes, viruses, theft of a computer, or even your computer being lost to natural disasters such as a flood. To put it simply, it just isn't worth the risk.
Here are some ways that you can safeguard your computer files:
• Make Copies: This is a labor intensive way to do things but it is effective. If you have a CD burner, which most computers now do, you can back up your files onto CDs and store them in a safe place. The only problem with this type of backup is that you will not get an opportunity to backup the latest files that you have until you are done for the day and if something happens in the meantime you may be vulnerable to losing some of your more recent files. This method also requires a great deal of discipline as you will literally have to back up your files every day in order to keep everything as safe as possible.
• File Backup on Computer: These days all computers come with some form of file backup and these are a great idea. You can set them to automatically backup your files at a certain time and if your system goes down then you have everything in a state where it can at least be restored. Here's the problem with this method; you are relying on your computer. If your computer gets stolen than your backed up files are gone too. You can set for the files to be baked up to CD or DVD but you run into the problem of discipline again.
• Online Backup: This is probably the most efficient and certainly the easiest way to go about backing up your computer files to help keep them safe. With online backup you will have to pay a small fee, usually monthly or yearly, but you will be able to backup whatever you want with no limitations. Best of all most online backup companies such as Mozy and Carbonite will run in the background without slowing your computer down and backup files as they are created. Once the system is set up you never again have to think about it. If you do lose your computer for whatever reason, you just use any online connection and you will have instant access to all your files with a secure user name and password. Hands down the best way to go when safeguarding your computer files.
