How To Select And Build Your Own Model Ship

Model ship building is a hobby for all age groups. Men and women alike can spend endless hours carefully assembling each piece. At times, all that one has to build with is a photograph or a two dimensional drawing. Every moment requires a steady hand and plenty of patience.

Here are a few tips to consider when selecting and building a model ship:

1. Pick up a good book: Education is a key element to anything we wish to accomplish in life including the successful construction of a model ship. Books like The Ship Model Builder's Assistant by Charles G. Davis or Building Warship Models by P.C. Coker are excellent resources to learning ship modeling techniques.

2. Decide on what style first: There are several models to select from. For instance warships, sailing ships, battleships, ocean liners, tug boats, etc. Then there are the materials you'll be using: wood or plastic.

3. Check out building kits for beginners: It is best to begin with a beginner's model kit. Don't jump right in and try to build the HMS Victory. You'll spend a lot of money, encounter a lot of frustration and very likely make so many "newbie" mistakes by the end that the model will be noticably flawed. Instead, choose a shio that is small and simple. You'll be surprised how much there is to learn even building something as simple as a Viking Longboat.

4. Read the instructions: Visit a hobby shop in your neighborhood where the store manager doesn't mind an occasional "newbie" model ship builder thumbing thru his model ship kits. Read the instructions in the kit and don't be afraid to ask questions.

5. Build from a kit: Beginners should always start with a kit. Most people build the hull first and then sub assemble parts like the ship's boats, carriages, and anchor. Assembling small pieces first will give you some sense of accomplishment.

The only way to truly become an expert on selecting and building model ships in a way that suits your skills, talents, taste and personality is through trial and error. Everything can be carefully planned, each piece strategically placed, sub assembles done, and still there is no guarantee that your first or second model ship will be a success. However, the quality of your work will improve with each model ship you build, so start off small and stay focused remembering the end result is a breath-taking model ship.
