The Tradition and Evolution of Giving Gifts

The practice of gift giving dates way, way back from the biblical times and even earlier. It has become part of person-to-person dealings throughout the centuries. Even then, gift giving was considered a gesture of good faith. They come in the form of mostly substantial items such as money, wares, produce, beautiful pieces of art, and sometimes, goodwill and friendship. Although some are genuinely pleased about the idea of doing others a favor without expecting anything in return, most instances of gift giving issue forth a semblance of, respect, authority, societal status. This is also occasionally even the love of somebody adored. During the biblical times, gift giving was seen as a form of sacrifice. Gift giving has evolved so much through the centuries to include rules on etiquette and other complexities. Most cultures even have their own sets of "rules" with regard to gift giving. The usual occasions that people are expected to give or receive gifts include weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, Father's day, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, Christmas and a whole lot more. Every so often, people hold celebrations for all sorts of causes. This is apart from the usual occasions where people give out or receive presents. These range from some of the most significant such as the birth of a national hero to something as frivolous and mundane as a favorite food. Some good examples are that the third Monday of February is Washington's birthday or President's day and July is known as Blueberries Month. The occasions that we celebrate nowadays are all " inventions" of men. In this day and age, human beings have "created" all sorts of reasons to give each other gifts. This is mostly for the purpose of creating more business. It is therefore not surprising to note that stores resort to all sorts of marketing schemes and gimmickry such as holding special sales around these dates to attract more people to check out their merchandise. They also promote particular types of goods to suit the occasion. In gift giving, a giver must consider several things. One must take into account the occasion, the receiver's preference, the message that the giver wants to convey to the receiver, and the giver's budget. In the world today, people have become so obsessed about brands and status so much so that they concern themselves too much about these minor details. Some would feel disappointed and even take it against the giver if they feel they have received something less than what they deserve. This is more on the part of the receiver more than the giver. Givers, on the other hand, sometimes expect something in return. All these are beside the point. There are those who feel that it is such a financial burden to give somebody a gift. One simply needs to think outside the box as there are some clever and innovative gift ideas. There are a lot of bright gift ideas that would not make a significant dent out of one's bank account that friends will appreciate. In spite of everything, it is important for both parties to set aside all motives and remember the real essence of gift giving. Gift giving, after all, is a symbol of friendship, love, and goodwill.
